With the storm approaching, many pool owners have asked how to protect their pools. If your pool was properly closed and winterized, the short answer is: not much. However, a few winter best practices are worth reviewing.
Winter Pool Cover Maintenance
If You Have a Permeable (Mesh) Winter Cover:

Water and snowmelt can pass through the cover into the pool. Make sure to remove the skimmer plug so water can enter the skimmer and drain out to the ground. Please take a moment to check the skimmer and confirm that water is flowing out. If the water level rises to the point where it reaches the concrete, freeze damage to the pool coping can occur.
If You Have a Solid Safety Cover or an Automatic Cover:

In this case, the skimmer plug should remain installed. Ensure that the pool water level is at the normal operating height to support the cover. Check that there is water in the skimmer and that the foam freeze protection and “gizmo” are in place.
Also, verify that the cover pump is operating properly, especially as snow and ice begin to melt. Floats can stick, and GFCI outlets can trip during storms. Make sure the discharge hose is positioned so water drains away from the pool area. Excess water left on an automatic cover can damage the system and may force pool water up and out through the skimmer.
Monitoring Sump Tubes and Groundwater Levels

After heavy rain or rapid snowmelt, it is crucial to monitor your sump tube. Remove the cover and observe the water level in the well point. Ideally, groundwater should be no closer than about 16 inches below the pool water level. If it is closer than that—or equal to the pool level—additional action may be required.
If you have a sump pump installed in your sump point, please confirm that it is plugged in and operating properly.
Additional Tips for Winter Pool Care
Regular Inspections
During winter, it’s important to conduct regular inspections of your pool area. Look for any signs of damage or wear on your pool cover. This can prevent bigger issues down the line.
Clear Debris
Make sure to remove any debris that accumulates on your pool cover. Leaves, branches, and snow can add extra weight, which can stress the cover. Keeping it clear will help maintain its integrity.
Check Water Levels
Keep an eye on the water levels in your pool. If you notice significant changes, it may indicate a problem that needs addressing.
Prepare for Spring
As winter comes to an end, start preparing for the spring opening of your pool. This includes checking your equipment and ensuring everything is in good working order.
