Union County, Ohio, is a largely rural county located 20 miles northwest of Columbus, formed in 1820 from parts of Franklin, Delaware, Madison, and Logan counties, reflecting its name as a "union" of these regions. With Marysville as its county seat, it has grown from a pioneer settlement into a modern community of over 62,000, balancing agricultural roots with industrial growth like the Honda Marysville Auto Plant.
Union County is home to the Honda Marysville Auto Plant, the first Japanese auto manufacturing facility in the U.S., which began producing the Honda Accord in 1982 and now employs over 5,000 people, making it a cornerstone of the local economy.
The county’s Jonathan Alder High School is named after a notable historical figure, Jonathan Alder, who was captured by Shawnee and Miami tribes in 1782 at age nine, lived with them for 20 years, and later became one of the area’s first white settlers after the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.
Union County’s Bigelow Cemetery holds the grave of Abraham Amrine, a Revolutionary War soldier of Swiss descent who settled the area in 1817, and whose tombstone, inscribed with his service details, marks one of the earliest pioneer burials in the region.
