Granville, Ohio
Granville, Ohio, is a picturesque village in Licking County, 35 miles east of Columbus, founded in 1805 by settlers from Granville, Massachusetts, seeking fertile land and a fresh start. Known for its New England-style charm and rolling Welsh Hills, it has grown into a vibrant community anchored by history, education, and a strong sense of place.
Granville is home to the Alligator Effigy Mound, a prehistoric earthwork built by the Fort Ancient culture between 800 and 1200 CE, stretching 250 feet long and possibly representing an underwater panther rather than an alligator, making it one of Ohio’s few surviving animal effigies.
The village nearly became an industrial giant in the early 19th century with iron furnaces and mills, but when the National Road and Ohio & Erie Canal bypassed it in the 1830s, it pivoted to education, paving the way for Denison University’s founding in 1831.
Granville’s temperance movement gained national attention in 1924 when the Anti-Saloon League bombed the saloon of local holdout Henry Corbin, an event dubbed “The Battle of Granville” that underscored its nickname, "Dry Capital of the World."
