Canal Winchester, Ohio, a small village with a rich history, owes much of its character to its early days along the Ohio & Erie Canal and a blend of quirky local lore. From its unique naming story to its cultural attractions, the following details highlight what makes this village stand out.
Canal Winchester was originally named Winchester after Winchester, Virginia, by its founder Reuben Dove in 1828. When the Ohio & Erie Canal was constructed through the area, the village flourished due to the canal’s role in transportation and trade. In 1841, the name was changed to Canal Winchester to distinguish it from other Ohio towns named Winchester and to honor the canal’s significant impact on its early development.
A local legend claims that Canal Winchester secured its post office in 1841 due to a prank. On Halloween night, two teenage boys reportedly hooked horses to the foundation of the post office in the nearby town of Waterloo and dragged it across the street to Winchester. This act symbolically ended Waterloo and solidified Winchester’s status, later becoming Canal Winchester.
