Delaware, Ohio

Delaware, Ohio, a city rich in history and natural wonders, offers a blend of intriguing tales and traditions that set it apart. From hidden caverns to harness racing fame and a legacy of courage in the fight against slavery, its unique stories continue to captivate.

Just north of Delaware lies the Olentangy Indian Caverns,  a large underground cave system formed millions of years ago in  limestone deposits. Discovered in 1821 by J.M. Adams when his ox fell  into an entrance, the caverns were historically used by the Wyandot  tribe for shelter and ceremonies, and today they’re a popular attraction  with tours and artifacts like arrowheads and a petroglyph.

Delaware is home to the Little Brown Jug,  one of harness racing’s most prestigious events, held annually at the  Delaware County Fairgrounds since 1946. Part of the Triple Crown for  pacing horses, it draws huge crowds—over 46,000 in 2024—and celebrates  the county’s deep equestrian roots, named after a legendary horse, Dan  Patch.

Delaware was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad,  with local abolitionists like Thomas Cox helping enslaved people escape  to freedom. The city’s early anti-slavery sentiment was bolstered by  Ohio Wesleyan University’s founders, and sites like the Nash House  reflect this history of resistance against slavery.
